Discovering Adoption: From Orphan to Child of God

Have you ever seen the musical Annie? It’s a classic tale of transformation—from orphaned misery to the embrace of a loving father figure. This story mirrors our journey as Christians, as Paul explains in Galatians 4:1-7.

Previously, we explored justification—the truth that in Christ, God declares us righteous. Now, we delve into adoption. Just as Annie found new life through adoption by Oliver Warbucks, we too are adopted into God’s family through Christ.

From Slaves to Sons

Paul begins by affirming that God's promise to Abraham remains despite the law’s introduction. The law, like a strict guardian (or Miss Hannigan), reveals our need for God’s grace rather than negating His promise. Through faith in Christ, we move from slavery under the law to full acceptance as God’s children.

Like a child awaiting inheritance, we were under the law's confinement. The law showed us our need for freedom from its demands. Through Christ, we anticipate the fullness of our inheritance.

In due time, God sent His Son, Jesus, born under the law, to redeem us. Christ’s sacrifice liberates us from the law's bondage, making us heirs of God’s promises.

Through the Holy Spirit, God assures us of our adoption. We cry out “Abba, Father!” knowing our relationship with God is secure. The Spirit is God’s pledge—a down payment on His promise to never forsake us.

Living as Children of God

Knowing our identity as God’s children should profoundly shape how we live:

  • Identity: Before any other role, recognize yourself as a child of God. This truth gives ultimate worth and significance.

  • Prayer: Approach God as your Father—honestly and intimately. He delights in hearing from His children.

  • Scripture: View the Bible as God’s loving message to His children. Approach it as a conversation with your Father.

You Are No Longer an Orphan

Just as Annie’s life was transformed by adoption, ours is too. Through Christ, we are no longer spiritual orphans but beloved children of God. Embrace this truth: in Christ, you have a new identity, a place in God’s family, and a future filled with hope and joy.
